Detection and filtration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
Volatile organic compounds – or VOCs – cover a wide range of substances, both natural and man-made. The best known are butane, ethanol (90° alcohol), acetone and benzene, which are found in industry, most often in the form of organic solvents (e.g. in paints or inks).
VOCs are used in a wide range of processes, including solvents, degreasers, dissolvers and cleaning agents. They are found in around twenty sectors of activity, including metallurgy, printing, mechanical engineering, the food industry, etc.
These substances are highly volatile and spread easily in the atmosphere, having a direct and indirect impact on living organisms and the environment. Every year, VOCs are responsible for several million deaths worldwide.
The ultimate weapon against particulate matter (PM)
Particulate matter, or PM, refers to particles suspended in the atmosphere.
They can come from nature (volcanoes, forest fires, etc.) or from human activity (diesel, open fires, etc.). High levels of fine or ultrafine particles in the air are a health risk factor that leads to reduced life expectancy.
As a category, PM is classified as carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and their inhalation causes or aggravates numerous cardiovascular diseases, including myocardial infarction, stroke, and heart failure.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), PM2.5 (with a diameter of less than 2.5 µm) kills more than 4,000,000 people per year. Chronic exposure to these particles increases the risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
